To close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. Benicia Unified School District offers the AVID Program in grades 8 through 12. While most AVID students continue through the program each year, applications are accepted year round to add students to the program if/as space is available.
What is AVID?
Who is an AVID Student?
AVID students are students in the academic middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process, a number of criteria are considered, including:
While all of the criteria are considered for acceptance into the program, no single criteria will necessarily eliminate a student from consideration. AVID is NOT an intervention program or remediation program.
How AVID Works
AVID brings research-based strategies and curriculum to educational institutions. The AVID System annually provides educators with training and methodologies that develop students' critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas. AVID students take the AVID elective course to learn skills in 5 main areas that are put to use in all classes and studying: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR). Tutorials occur every Tuesday and Thursday during the AVID Elective class period. This is an opportunity to get help in areas or for specific concepts students are struggling with. AVID is not just another program... at its heart, AVID is a philosophy: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge.
